Wakefield Orchestral Wind celebrated its 25th anniversary on Saturday (21st March) by holding a Silver Jubilee Play Day at Ossett War Memorial Community Centre. The regular members of the band were joined by over 20 guests to make one large wind band.
Catherine Clarke, who founded the band 25 years ago, dropped by during the lunch break and she was able to share some of the early history of the band with everyone.
Paul Hannon & Julia Percival, both current members of the band, were in fact founder members and they remember well the excitement of this new venture.
The band was expertly guided through the day by its conductor, Lee Muncaster, who rehearsed 8 different pieces of music which were then performed to friends and family. (The pieces we played were:- Angels, Cheek to Cheek, Earth, Wind & Fire, Eve of the War, Game of Thrones. March Celebration, Music and Second Suite in Eb.
Julia Percival said “It was a physically demanding day for us all, so the couple of breaks we had during it were very welcome indeed. They also gave us the opportunity to chat with friends, old and new. It was particularly wonderful that Catherine was able to join us. We both find it hard to believe 25 years have passed!”
The band meets on Thursday evenings at Ossett War Memorial Community Centre and would welcome new members. Further information is available via our website, Facebook page or by contacting Julia on 07881 980620.
Here’s to the next 25 years!
